Goa - Queen of the Beaches :
Until 1961, Goa was one of the last remaining Portuguese colonies in India. And for centuries before that, it has been a land of cultural and religious importance to Hindus too. This has resulted in the formation of a state that celebrates the Portuguese zest for life while still holding a place for Hindu tradition and custom, where Christmas is celebrated as is Diwali. Also, the decades of interaction with foreign tourists has imparted a unique spirit that embraces people form all walks of life.
Culture of Goa :
Goa is steeped in both Christian and Hindu tradition. But above all, it is the place where the weary traveler from all parts of India and the world, comes to experience "susegado" - the desire to unwind and live a little. Goa has some of the best churches and Portuguese mansions that you simply must visit. Of special interest is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, a World Heritage Monument that has housed the sacred mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier since 1695.
Language :
Commonly spoken throughout the state, English is the lingua franca of Goa. By virtue of being an erstwhile Portuguese colony, some of the elder generation speaks Portuguese too. Goa also has a resident population of Europeans, which is why a lot of shopkeepers, street vendors and restaurant staff are conversational in French, Spanish and Italian. Konkani is the language of most Goans, while Marathi and Hindi and also widely spoken and understood.
